Camping refers to a well-liked recreational activity involving one or more nights spent outdoors in a natural area, either at a campsite or "roughing it" in the bush. Campers pack the essentials, leave their homes, depart from their cities or towns, and say good-bye to civilization in order to seek the enjoyments of a vacation in the wild. Campers can opt for a variety of sleeping arrangements: a tent, recreational vehicle (RV), cabin, or no shelter at all. Most of the time, "camping" refers to the use of portable structures such as tents. However, camping can also refer to a vacation in a permanent camp with cabins and services.
Camping is often combined with hiking. Campers would hike either by backpacking and camping along their route, or taking day hikes from a central campsite. Camping is also associated with the following activities: swimming, kayaking, fishing, hill walking, canoeing, climbing, motorcycling, and mountain biking.
Facilities vary according to the type of camping. Survivalist camping requires the least amount of equipment as campers often set off with only what they can carry on their backs. Campers can camp with only tents, or with no tent, sleeping under the stars. At the other end of the spectrum, RV campers come with their own amenities, such as electricity, heat, air conditioning, bathrooms, kitchens, showers, and even home theater systems. Despite, the modern camper has access to a range of options. Wilderness campers can carry in their backpacks movable mattresses and chairs, and satellite phones powered by the sun. For tent campers, modern equipment includes tent interior lighting and fans.
Campgrounds are places that provide facilities for tents or RVs, such as fire pits, barbecue grills, electricity, public washrooms and laundry. Campgrounds are usually situated with access to recreational areas. Campers can be any age and ability level, and campsites are designed to accommodate a wide range of people. Not all campgrounds provide the same level of services. Some campsites are little more than a patch of ground, while others are level, paved pads complete with utilities and sewer.
It is usually less expensive to stay at a tent camping site than a campsite with full amenities. Most campgrounds are easily accessible by car, although there are also "walk-in" campsites. These sites are a short distance from the road, but close enough that they do not require full backpacking equipment.
Car camping refers to camping close to one's car with a tent. Camping is also well-liked in conjunction with motorcycles, boats, bicycles, pack animals, canoes, and bush planes. Simply backpacking on foot is always popular.
